my ‘must have freebie apps’ list

lil free apps i don’t like to be withoutall for OS X and non musical, i will do a freebie round-up for musical stuff too some time. will be quite a list though :)

@-time X: “@-time is a simple application that displays local time and the time in four world cities. It also displays GMT (UTC) time and Internet (@) time.”
atariboy sez: just found this and its the best one i have found so far cause #1, its free, #2, neat and tidy(sits in dock) #3 doesn’t chew too much resources.

MenuMeters: “MenuMeters is a set of CPU, memory, disk, and network monitoring tools for MacOS X.”
atariboy sez: LOVE this thing… sits in my menu bar and does its thing… i look at it almost as much as the time ;)

PithHelmet: “he PithHelmet adds some basic but powerful content filtering to Apple’s Safari browser. The basic purpose is to filter advertisements, but there are other potential uses as well (blocking Flash, Shockwave or horrible midi loops).”
atariboy sez: i moved over to safari from camino this week and have had this installed since then as well. does a great job blocking ads from most places. awesome!

PTHPasteboard: “PTHPasteboard is a pasteboard buffer application. It keeps track of the last 20 (changeable in preferences) items that you copied/cut and allows you to paste them at any time. You should move this application to one of your Applications directories and set it to autolaunch on login.”
atariboy sez: i have been using this the longest out of any of these apps and i still love it and use it ALL the time. i even sent the programmer some better graphics for it which are used for the main pop up window cause the origionals where darn ugly. the default menubar icons are not that great either so i have made my own for that too. thats not included(maybe one day). if you want it, let me know.

ShadowKiller X:
atariboy Sez: removes dropshadows from OS X windows which speeds up my rev a tiBook a SHIT LOAD cause of its crappy video card. i put this in my login items.

escapepod: “escapepod is a little application that lets you terminate the frontmost application by hitting Control-Alt-Delete, terminate the Dock by hitting Shift-Control-Alt-Delete, or do a force-logout by hitting Command-Control-Alt-Delete. There are times that Mac OS X appears to be hung (especially in some games) when it really isn’t—just the frontmost application’s GUI is wedged. The Dock also occasionally stops responding under some circumstances, which can be cured by terminating it . Additionally, when the entire GUI appears to be hung, it is safer to do a force-logout than to simply reboot your machine (and it is quicker, too).”
atariboy sez: another app now in my login items. another recent find and i actually havn’t had to use it yet but i know it will come in handy some day

mi: “mi is a text editor to write HTML source, C language source, and so on. It supports your editing by many features such as keyword colorize feature.”
atariboy sez: a great simple and FAST editor that opens all text files and displays them nicely. thats mostly what i use it for; i do make notes with it though cause i still havn’t found a good replacement to OS 9’s ‘Notepad’ :(
