Ideas for controlling an audio app in real time. The thinking behind this is to help using a laptop more like a real time instrument without the use of external midi controllers
idea #1: Improving the XY controller
Multiple XY controllers on screen. All XYs are assignable to multiple effects parameters.
A single click on the XY controller area hooks the mouse/trackpad movements. ie, the mouse doesn’t move anymore, but the XY co-ordinates are still changed. While in this mode, keyboard entry is still allowed. Clicking left & right arrow keys for example would flick through which XY controller you are actually controlling. another click of the pointer button and it leaves this mode.
idea #2:
The idea to extend the XY style into XYZ. Simply hold down a key down (eg, command or option) and this causes the pointer device to control the Z ‘depth’ allowing performance of more effect parameters . depth could be shown by a 3d ball which moves back and forth or fading from one colour to another. This could be extended further past the old XYZ style. You could hold down any keys to change or add which parameters are being performed with. If this is made so, perhaps it would be time to dispense of the XYZ scheme.
If you do have a midi controller, the XYZ etc etc co-ordinates should be controllable by this. Would still make a nice way to assign controllers.
More ideas are bound to come on this subject later.
